Note to editors: 2022 introduces Black Saturday
Cardlink presents how the market performed and which were the top sectors in sales during Black Friday 2022
In recent years, Black Friday has been established in our country. Both businesses and consumers alike have added the last week (or weeks) of November to their calendars and every year they have many expectations. Cardlink, a member of Worldline, the European leader in the payments and transactional services industry, as every year, collects and processes data from card transactions made at partner businesses and presents the performance of Black Friday 2022.
A detailed analysis of consumers’ activity and the dynamics of each sector is indicative of the market as a whole. In a year where the energy crisis and rising inflation have impacted consumers’ activity, data for Black Friday 2022 shows an overall increase in transactions by 9% compared to 2021. Although in terms of total turnover and transactions, Friday, November 25th took the lead, the peak of card transactions per minute was reached on Saturday, November 26th, with 4,392 transactions.
The top sectors based on the number of transactions in both online and POS purchases during Black Friday are: household appliances (+140%), women’s accessories (+108%), men/women’s clothing (+105%), shoes (+94%) and electronics/telecommunication goods (+88%).
Similarly, the value of the average transaction in each sector is also interesting, as it seems that in addition to more purchases, consumers were ready to spend more this year. The average purchase amount was: €53 in men’s and women’s clothing, €167 in household appliances, €45 in cosmetics, €89 in electronics/telecommunication goods, and €42 in toys.
Additionally, e-commerce purchases remained high this year with consumers being familiar with online shopping and choosing, especially on occasions like Black Friday, to avoid queues and crowds. The top sectors in terms of the number of online transactions during the week of Black Friday compared to the previous 3 weeks of November were: home appliances (+131%), electronics/ telecommunication goods (+100%), men/women’s clothing (+98%) and cosmetics (+66%).
Installment payments increased by 202% compared to the average of the three previous Fridays of November, confirming that interest-free installments were and remain the no1 choice of consumers for post-purchase payments.
Cardlink has invested significantly in infrastructure in recent years to cope with the increased transaction requirements. Through a dynamic process, infrastructure needs are closely monitored and there is an immediate intervention to resolve problems. Cardlink’s dedicated monitoring team monitors the infrastructure and transaction systems daily and uninterruptedly to have the most immediate reaction to any problem that may arise. During the week of Black Friday 2022, more than 12,420,000 transactions passed through Cardlink’s systems and were successfully processed.
