Haris Markaki, Marketing Manager at Cardlink, interviewed by Marketing Week

March 2019

In her interview for MarketingWeek’s column “Marketing … rules!”, Haris Markaki, Marketing Manager at Cardlink said that “Media aren’t only a means for advertising anymore; they’re a part of the product itself.”

1. The greatest challenges for marketing today are…

The greatest challenge for marketing today is the existence of powerful media which not only facilitate your ability to reach your audience more than ever, but also make it harder to grab its attention. These powerful media tools provide access, communication and collaboration opportunities which shape the way we design and provide products or services to the market today.  Therefore, media aren’t only a means for advertising, but also a part of the product itself.

2. What I see as the largest trend in communications today is…

The inclusion of artificial intelligence through bots in our daily communications with our audience. Without a doubt, artificial intelligence facilitates communication by making it more direct, even though the customer is actually “talking” to a robot, a snippet of code! If you’ve consistently listened to and understood your audience as a marketeer for a long period of time, this code, based on your instructions, can approach human communication to a nearly frightening level.

3. A job I envy is…

…Sheryl Sandberg’s job as COO of Facebook. As a prominent leading figure, she presented the “She Means Business” campaign, her vision to help more women in 30 countries start and develop their businesses. As she said: “When women succeed, we all succeed”, and that’s something I also fully believe in.

4. An example of a lost opportunity was…

There are no lost opportunities when you know that, at any given moment, you’re doing the best you can.

5. The skills required by the next generation of marketeers are…

Speed and agility. You can learn anything if you put your mind to it, so the most important part is to realize what you need to learn and then quickly focus on it.

6. If I had the “magic wand of marketing”, I would…

create a bot that would help me with my daily tasks. It would talk like me and do everything exactly the way I would. It would also teach me about all the new developments in technology. Then I’d have more free time and I would always be informed!
