Cardlink presents how the market performed during Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2023
Cardlink, a member of Worldline, the European leader in the payments and transactional services industry, as every year, collects and processes data* from card transactions made at partner businesses and presents the performance of Black Friday 2023, for the period 13-27/11.
Despite the long sales period, which lasted almost a month, the number of transactions on the day of Black Friday remained about the same as last year, with a slight change of < 1%.
Compared to the previous three weeks in November, the week of Black Friday saw a 17% increase in total business turnover, while the number of transactions decreased by 1%. In addition, the periods 13-19/11 and 20-26/11 show changes in both the number of transactions and turnover of -4% and 6% respectively, compared to the immediately preceding two weeks of November (30/10 – 5/11 and 6/11-12/11).
At the same time, this year, the maximum number of card transactions in one minute, at POS and online stores, was carried out on the day of Black Friday, on Friday 24/11 at 17:20, with 5,450 transactions, while Cyber Monday (Monday 27/11) seems to have had its moment as well, since it was the second day in terms of number of online transactions for November, behind Black Friday. Compared to the average of the 3 previous Mondays (20, 13, 6 November), shopping activity on Cyber Monday was high, with a 51% increase in e-commerce turnover.
In terms of sectors, the leading one this year was the household appliances sector, with a percentage change in turnover compared to the previous Fridays of November of +242%, followed by supermarkets with an increase of 208%, the cosmetics sector with an increase of 182%, furniture with an increase of 123% and men’s clothing with an increase of +92%.
Similarly, the value of the average transaction is also interesting, with the furniture sector leading the way with the highest average purchase amount of 195€. This is followed by jewelry (€194), the electrical appliances sector (€111), men’s clothing (€103) and the catering sector (€69).
In addition, thousands of consumers preferred to shop online this year. More specifically, the top sectors in terms of percentage increase in turnover during the week of Black Friday (compared to the three previous weeks) were: electrical goods (+255%), women’s clothing (+174%), men’s/women’s clothing (+150%), household appliances (+146%) and footwear (90%).
Cardlink has invested heavily in infrastructure in recent years to cope with the increased transaction requirements. Through a dynamic process, infrastructure and transaction systems are monitored daily and seamlessly, so that there is immediate intervention to resolve any issues. During the week of Black Friday 2023, more than 12.9 million transactions passed through Cardlink’s systems and were successfully processed.
